2020 has given unprecedented power to governments across the globe. The response to the pandemic has been flawed to varying degrees depending on who your President was. 2020 has allowed us a glimpse into a world of authoritarian rule; where elected officials can lock a country down, close borders, remove citizen freedoms in an instant.
A year ago, it would have been unimaginable.
Today, it underscores the importance of ensuring that those in power are being watched and held to account.
Only a small percentage of our readers are Maverick Insiders and it’s because of these people that we are still around today. When we launched the programme we were just a few payrolls from disaster. But more than financial support our members are part of a community who believe that our mission to Defend Truth is a cause worth joining.
We saw many of our colleagues and competitors find themselves in the unenviable position of having to retrench staff or worse - fold. In any other business environment, this would have given us a ‘competitive edge’ but we don’t see it like that. We believe what we do is a public service and fewer journalists is less journalism and reduced accountability in a country that’s in desperate need for it.
